The Butoh ――A dedication to Tatsumi Hijikata
 Part 2
Abyss of ”Quiet House”

2-7 Reduction by X and regeneration

Hijikata remaimed many scrap book of western artist.
We can see copies of them at 'Hijikata Tatsumi Archive' at Tokyo.
When I have seen them, I noticed that Hijikata must resonate with them through his method of 'Reduction by X and regeneration'.

Hijikata tried to reduce Human by X, he must resonate with their various ways of reduction of human.
Especially, Bacon, Beardsley, Bellmer, Bosch, Goya, Michaux, Rudon, Turner, Wols had their own method to reduce an element from human, then they created unique drawing.
Here we can learn the 'Reduction by X and regeneration' which was the most general method of Hijikata for flexible transformation.

Reduction by X and regeneration

Behind the mirror

What is the Reduction by X?

It is the most important method of transformation for Hijikata.
To reduce means to minus an specfic element from Human.
X can be anything.
When the healthy is reduced from normal human, it becomes weakened body.
When speed of movement is reduced, it becomes slow motion.
When time is reduced, it becomes stillness.
When a numbers of dimension reduced from three dimensional thing, it becomes two dimensional flat shape.
When some decades reduced from adult body, it becomes child, baby or fetus.

Thus, 'Reduction by X and regeneration' is multiple method for transformation.
Hijikata got it through his long experience of trial of transformation, and fixed it in the butoh score for his last solo of 'Quiet House'.

He resonated with several western artists; Bacon, Beardsley, Bellmer, Bosch, Goya, Michaux, Rudon, Turner, Wols and so on.
Because also they had their own transformation method to reduce some elements from human. He could deepen his 'Reduction by X' method through them.

We can find some Hijikata's Butoh words in his student, Waguri Yukio's private butoh notebook about them.

We will try to investigate in it in the next chapters.
